Topaz Class

Topaz Class           Topaz

Our vision is to give our children, who are at the very beginning of their school life, a rounded and outstanding education. Moving on from child-led play in Nursery, children have a balance of adult led and experience led learning activities. They learn through a combination of play and more formal, taught lessons in both the indoor and outdoor classroom spaces. Our wonderful outdoor provision is open and inviting and the adults set this up to tempt children into engaging wholeheartedly in large construction, large physical movement and unique learning opportunities.

Throughout the academic year we hold parent and carer workshops and drop ins. This is so that you can find out about how we teach some of our curriculum content, and also so that you can enjoy some activities with your child in their school setting. Check out the school calendar and the diary page on the newsletter to find out more details.

Emerald Class

Emerald Class           Emeralds

Emerald is one of our Year Two classes. With less than 20 children in class, each pupil benefits from high quality adult interaction and support.

Our whole curriculum was redeveloped last academic year and the children benefit from both geography and history planning that is finely tailored to make it relevant to the local area as well as national and global views. As children enter Year Two, they still enjoy learning through the Floppy's Phonics system, which is our vehicle for teaching reading and early spelling. As the academic year progresses, they move onto guided reading and comprehension and further spelling work using The Spelling Shed.

Writing is now taught using 'Ready Steady Write' from Literacy Counts; this scheme uses good quality texts and expands children's experiences and knowledge through a range of genre. As we work through the year, new and adapted units of work also feed into our wider 'topics' where appropriate.

The staff work hard to plan learning that threads through the wider curriculum areas, and we share our learning through the Tapestry app as well as through newsletters and showcase events in school.

You can read more about specific subjects via the 'Subjects' area on the website.

Our dedicated Key Stage One Playground gives children in Years One and Two physical opportunities at break and lunchtimes and is also used, along with the school field, to enhance learning opportunities on-site.

Amethyst Class

Amethyst Class     Amethyst stones

Amethyst is our dedicated Year One Class. We begin the year with a mix of areas of provision, for directed and self-directed play based learning, and formal lessons. By the end of the year, the children will have developed enough to enjoy a fully formal curriculum offer which is supported through 'hands-on' learning activities.

The curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of pupils with both geography and history written at school level so that we can help the children embrace their local area as well as begin to understand their place in the national and global world. Through the use of 'ready Steady Write' we teach them the skills and knowledge required to become fluent writers, all backed up through our phonics scheme, Floppy's Phonics.

You can find out mor about all of our curriculum subjects through the 'Subjects' tab on this website.

The children enjoy break and lunchtimes in our dedicated Key Stage One area, where they have age suitable equipment to continue to develop their physical and large motor skills.

Please make sure that you check your Tapestry app daily to find out what the children have been learning each day.

Our outdoor learning area provides children with the opportunity to explore learning outside of the classroom environment and staff plan outdoor learning on a daily basis.

Diamond Class (Pre School Nursery)

Diamond Class                         Diamonds

With two outdoor learning areas adjacent to the school field, and its own entrance, our nursery children feel excited to be here from the moment they arrive.

The indoor classroom is set up to provoke and entice our little learners with tasks and play resources that promote all aspects of their learning. Organised and run on a daily basis by two experienced teachers and our fantastic nursery practitioner, every day is fun and experiential, with children and staff singing and imagining their way through their sessions.

Check out the gallery below and, if your child already attends, look at (and like!) the posts on our Tapestry app to see what they get up to.

If you are interested in looking around and signing your chid up, then call the school office on or email admin@cockburnhaighroad.org
