Letter from the Headteacher

Dear Website Visitor

Welcome to Cockburn Haigh Road Academy’s website. I hope that you find lots of information here and that you enjoy finding out about our school.

At the very heart of the community in Rothwell, we have a proud tradition of many children attending whose parents and grandparents have been before. There has been a school on this site since the opening of Wood Lane Provided School in 1904 and our building combines the original Edwardian building that can be seen from Haigh Road, with more modern classrooms to the rear.

The school is now a 1.5 form (45 places per year group) infant school and part of the Cockburn Multi Academy Trust. You can see from the school vision that all of the staff here have a real passion for educating the whole child. This means that we teach pastoral as well as academic values. We strive to empower children and to instill an ethos of hard work and independence in children’s work and play.

This academic year, we very much have a focus on teaching children from their starting points, and are mindful that many have been out of educational provision for six months or more. Reading is at the core of our curriculum, which is under regular review to make sure that it meets the needs of all of our learners.

As part of our whole school training in September, classroom based staff had their first day to upskill them in using Talk for Writing to embed and enhance story telling into our literacy lessons. You can see examples of how we tell stories using actions on our school YouTube page Story Telling by the staff - YouTubeStaff will continue to update their skills in teaching oral retelling throughout this academic year.

Maths is taught using the White Rose Maths materials and we are embedding Maths Mastery in KS1. Our Early Years staff will be training throughout the year on Maths Mastery techniques too, under the guidance of Miss Pratt, the school Maths Lead.

I look forward to watching the children develop and grow over the coming year and to working with all of our wonderful families.

Yours Faithfully

Jacqueline Padgett
